Cabin Crochet is an old tradition of the Inland Waterways; a means by which the working boatwomen were able to beautify the tiny cabins that were their homes.  It is also an ideal craft to practice in the confined space of a narrowboat, as all that is required is a ball of cotton and a crochet hook.  Most of the nets I crochet are made from Twilleys 'Southern Comfort' mercerised crochet cotton, and I usually use a 1.25 mm crochet hook.
Many of the boatwomen from the heyday of the working canals had no opportunity to learn to read, so would copy patterns from small samples of lace passed on from friends or family members.  Nowadays we are lucky to have pattern books recording some of the old traditional patterns, and I hope that those listed here will encourage others to take up the craft, thereby not only gaining great satisfaction from producing attractive nets, but also continuing a tradition of a once much undervalued group, the working boatwomen.
